Going on vacation is exciting and can certainly be a lot of fun, but the process of traveling from one place to another can be a less than thrilling one. This article contains tips that are designed to streamline or spruce up travel for rookie travelers, seasoned travelers, and everyone in between.

1. Don't underestimate your hunger. This tip comes from the experience of someone who decided on a whim to take a train from Texas to Chicago to visit a childhood friend. This person, we'll call her Fran, decided to travel via railroad rather than by airplane because time was of no object to her, but money was. As Fran prepared for her vacation, she packed herself what she considered to be a day's worth of food in a soft-sided cooler. After her fourth hour on the train, she found that she had eaten her entire "day's worth" of food. She was then forced to purchase overpriced, overly processed snack car for the remainder of her close to 26 hour trip. The moral of Fran's story is this: do not underestimate your hunger. Be sure to pack yourself plenty of food and/or bring enough money to buy all of the food that you'll need.

2. Bottle it up. Most people today are painfully familiar with the not-so-new airport security measures that have been taken. The days in which travelers could bring their morning coffee or protein shake with them on their flights are long gone, and airport vendors have taken advantage of this fact by jacking up the prices of all of the beverages for sale past security check points. They know that in between the check point and the airplane all drinks are precious commodities. The savvy traveler can, however, fight back by bringing an empty refillable water bottle along with them in their carry-on luggage. Once past security the traveler can fill up their water bottle at one of the water fountains provided by the airport. Even better, travelers can pack some serving sized packets of crystallized drink mix so that they can enjoy flavored water or a fruit drink for a fraction of the price that airport shops charge.

3. Layering is your friend. This tip may seem fairly obvious to people who travel often, but the benefits of dressing in layers should not be underestimated. In order to ensure their comfort while traveling, vacationers should be sure to dress in layers according to their origin, their destination, and everything in between. Most people know how to dress for the climate where they live, but it's also a great idea for travelers to check on the weather where they're going. Travelers should also remember that many modes of transportation (including planes and trains) are often heavily air conditioned regardless of the temperature outside, so jackets and sweaters may be in order even in summer months. Additionally, travelers should remember to leave enough room in their carry-on luggage to stuff in any unwanted layers.
