Myths About Dating-Site Photos Busted

Posing with your top off in dating site profile pictures is guaranteed to snag you a date – but only if you're a man, according to new research.

In a myth-busting report on profile pictures, dating site OK Cupid found showing well-honed abs got men more internet interest than if they dressed up.

Men between 18 and 31 got more success per ten attempts (8.8) when flexing their muscles for shots, with the interest rate dropping off rapidly once the posers were in their '40s.

Only men that took pictures with animals scored higher, attracting interest nine out of ten attempts.

For women, results showed the opposite with 'animals' judged to be the least appealing flirting prop (6.5 new contacts monthly).

Surprisingly, women were less likely to get contacted if they showed cleavage, though flirting with the camera by pouting or narrowing eyes (9.2 contacts a month) scored more interest than simply smiling (9.1 contacts).

Age was less of a barrier for women, with cleavage-flashing women in their 30s only getting one message fewer than 18-year old girls.

Despite revealing pictures getting 12.9 more messages on average per month, the likelihood of any turning into meaningful exchanges was far lower at 23 per cent than if the female subject posed with an animal (37 per cent).

The report concluded that despite all the established myths being proved false that it didn't actually matter if you showed your face or not because users were intrigued by unconventional photos of people in exotic places or strange poses.
