Funding is to be given to two new projects which aim to help individuals with Type 1 diabetes to achieve healthy living practices.

Research Australia reveals that money is to be given to the projects as it celebrates 30 years of research into the condition.

The announcement was made on Thursday, November 13th, to coincide with World Diabetes Day 2008.

According to Research Australia, the potential link between the physical effects of diabetes and the corresponding psychological impact is frequently forgotten.

Funds are being provided by the Diabetes Research Foundation, a body formed in 1976 with the intention of finding a cure for the condition.

Meanwhile, the organisation adds that healthy living among younger diabetes sufferers was firmly on the agenda at this year's Diabetes Day.

A number of its grant recipients are looking into childhood and adolescent diabetes, the group asserts.

Dr Erica Smyth, chair of the foundation, explains that living with diabetes provides obstacles for all individuals with the condition, whether young or old.

Researchers at the University of Warwick revealed earlier this year that diabetes may be associated with heart disease.

They explained that oxidative stress - previously thought of as a symptom of coronary disease - may actually indicate a glucose abnormality such as Type 2 diabetes.
