Craft Ideas for Valentines

After the crush of consumption during the Christmas holidays, Valentine’s Day gift giving can seem daunting and even excessive. A simple solution is to show your love by giving of your time and energy to create something personal and handmade.

Candles are always a romantic gesture. Pick up several solid colored pillar candles at a local department store or super-center, as well as glossy craft glue. Gather dried flowers, tiny doilies and other appropriate embellishments.

Eyeball your materials, and figure out the ideal placement of your trimmings on the candles. Cover the candles with a layer of glue and press decorations flat. Allow the glue to dry. Apply two more coats of glue and, again, allow to dry completely.

The next couple of projects are alternatives to that old Valentine’s Day stalwart, the bouquet of flowers. These unique takes on flora will win any Valentine extra points for the unexpected. In the first you will need:

• Lots of tissue paper in reds, pinks, purples, or your sweetie’s favorite colors
• An abundance of green pipe cleaners
• About eighteen inches of pretty ribbon
• Scissors

Make a stack of ten tissue papers of varying hues. Cut out the shape of a four inch long dog bone. Set aside the bone shaped stack of papers. Repeat this until no more bones can be made with the remaining papers. Skewer the center of each stack of tissue bones with a pipe cleaner, poking through one paper at a time. Fan the bones around the pipe cleaner until all are evenly splayed, creating a circular shape. Bend the top of the pipe cleaner to create a center of the flower and to help keep the petals firmly attached. Make a little pinch at the base of the petals, to create a more heart like shape. Play with the shape of the petal until it looks exactly how you want it. Rinse and repeat until all materials are used. Gather your paper flowers together and tie with ribbon.

The second bouquet replacement project manages to combine two quintessential Valentine’s classics: flowers and candy. For this craft you should get together:

• A bag of Hershey’s Kisses, whichever type is your Valentine’s favorite
• Transparent red cellophane paper
• Floral wire
• Green floral tape
• Clear tape
• About eighteen inches of pretty ribbon

Grab two Kisses and put them flat-side together. Wrap them with the red cellophane, secure the gathered bottom of the paper with clear tape, and trim the excess. You’ve created a cute little rosebud! Insert the end of a ten inch piece of floral wire into the bottom of the bud. Wrap this with floral tape until the wire is firmly attached to the bud and the ends of the red paper are completely obscured. Wrap the rest of the wire in tape. Make as many as desired. Gather your chocolate rosebuds into a bouquet and tie together with ribbon. Present this edible handicraft (also works with paper flowers, above) to your sweetheart with this tongue in cheek exclamation: “These flowers, like my love for you, will never die!”
